A question I’ve gotten a lot in the past 15 days here in San Francisco, California.
Well for starters, there have been more changes in my life in the past two weeks than in the past year I spent in Michigan. Let’s go through what changed and then asses each thing.
-I moved to San Francisco for 6 months at a minimum.
-I packed my life into two suitcases.
-I started working at a startup company as a sales development representative.
-I found an apartment within one week of being in California.
These things are all insanely significant steps in growing as an individual. Are the necessary? Maybe not, but they’re definitely stretching me personally and professionally.
San Francisco as a city is a bustling hub of people, businesses, and innovation. I’ve been traveling to it every morning for work because I’m living in San Mateo with my cousin and his fiancee (shoutout to Trevor and Robin, you guys are fantastic). Through commuting using Caltrain, I’ve found that I’m not exactly a fan of my 3 hour round trip route each day. However, I now have a solid understanding of how the train systems here work, which is extremely necessary.
Besides all this, the city has this general vibe of creation and innovation that is extremely infectious. Being around so many startups and other people doing crazy things in any given market is a really beneficial environment
As for working at a startup company, it is really a completely different environment, but for the better. I am so glad I was able to have Yoshi as my praxis business partner because I get to sell a really cool service that nobody else is really offering. My coworkers are helpful and the offices we work at are great, very San Francisco. I mean c’mon, we have “medicinal kombucha” on tap.
Living in the city is going to be much more cohesive to working in the city, so I can’t wait to move in on 4/25/18. Speaking of moving in, I’ve met my housemates, Akhil and Nima, and they seem like they’ll be good people to live with as they were easy to talk to and we were all understanding and respectful of each other. The best part is that my apartment will have everything I need, a gym, multiple separate rooms to host guests, open community kitchens, and rooftop access with grills and furniture. The unit itself has all the appliances we will need as well, which is rare.
Sadly, there are still a lot of things I’ll need to get for the apartment that I’ve really never had to worry about. Like an iron and an ironing board…I’ve never needed to buy an iron in my life, or silverware, or dishes. Okay, you get the point. This is a good thing though, I’m running out of all the travel sized things I brought with me initially.
I’m definitely missing the familiarities of home a bit, except the weather. The week I left Michigan was ramping up to be: “Winter the sequel”, and this sequel then premiered the following week after I left. While it was not a hit with the locals it continued for another week after. The weather in San Francisco is stuck around 55-70 with the worst events being some rain and wind.
I miss everyone back home and I love when anyone reaches out to ask me a question about SF or just to see how I’m doing. I hope to post a new update here every weekend, so stay tuned.
