Email=Antithesis of Communication

Yesterday, I tried to Email a blog to a fellow Praxian and first I sent a link with the wrong share feature, then I sent a current work with the right share feature but it was a different article entirely. This was mostly due to user error on my end I will admit, but the whole transaction took about 10 minutes to rectify, which seems quick. So what’s the problem then?

I would argue that if I had not been using the abysmal communication vehicle that is Email, that I would not have made the errors I did. I would even go as far to say that I would be a much better communicator if I never sent another Email. Before you freak out, I want to say that this is not my farewell letter to Email, but rather my quarrel with it.

The problems I’ve had with E-mail are:

  1. E-mail is not dependable. people regard their Emails so differently, it’s a huge priority for some people to answer their emails right away and they can. But for most others, they typically reply days later if at all, and the formatting is all off.
  2. There are so many RULES surrounding an Email. How to word the greeting, have an ask, how to word the end, what words to use when speaking to superiors or advisors. Sending a good Email is almost like an art.
  3. It is difficult to sort through. I know people who get 200+ Emails a day and they have to sort through them and reply to, keep, or trash all of them. Even for me, I get about 40 emails a day (mostly junk) I have to sort through.

Maybe more practice would make me feel better about Emails in general, but with current technology, I do not think it’s the best form of online communication. Sure, it looks professional when you can send a nice email or manage your emails really well, but what if we did away with that entirely? There are still professional methods of communication that would relive a lot of the pain points I have with email. I suggest using something like slack, facebook workplace, LinkedIn messaging (Barf), or shoot me a text or call…seriously anything but an Email.

Is email useless? Not at all, it can be very important for professional offers, holding account information, and tracking credit card payment or packages. But only one of those things needs a timely, professional, reply. I still think Email has its uses, but fluid communication is not really one of them in my opinion. I’ve had success just using facebook messaging, texting, and video conferencing for all communication when working with Nest of Vipers Airsoft. The only things we email are spreadsheets and other layout forms which do not require a response. If you made it this far, and you want to say something, leave me a comment here or send me a personal message on any platform in the footer of this site. Let’s save some time and frustration.

  1. I am one who reads them days later. For me not a good way to get a quick response. Over and out.
