A lot of my friends have goals set for their college career or a skilled trade, and can’t quite wrap their heads around what I’m doing in Praxis, let alone understand how I got an internship with a local business that reselling through Amazon. So I’m going to do my best to try to explain it once and (perhaps) for all.
Reselling on Amazon from my perspective looks a bit like the stock market; researchers find what items are in demand, we buy those items, then we flip them for 30% or more profit. Much of the money is tied up in the product that is sent to Amazon’s warehouses, but with hundreds of sales a day it can be transformed back into a direct monetary asset very quickly. There is a massive transfer of money that goes on each day when new items are sold, processed, or purchased. It is a lot to keep track of, so what is my part in all of this? I help to process new products that come in, I remove old labels and replace them with our own, I pack the products back up to be sent to their respective warehouses, and I list items on eBay from time to time.
This is not a career for me by any means, but it gives me an inside look at how people are using popular websites and capitalizing on preexisting platforms by providing a product people want with enough convenience to command a higher price point. Which is really what it boils down to, people will pay the extra $5 for some toilet paper if it means they only have to go as far as their front step in order to get it. I like the system, I just don’t know if I would like to try doing it on my own yet. Which works perfectly because I think it is really helpful to watch and learn some of the more simplistic sides of this business before looking at the technical. Not to mention the fact that it’s really helpful to work with other entrepreneurs who have a similar mindset to mine. They tried college and found that it would not give them what they wanted out of life, which drove them to innovate and create the exact schedule they want every day.
